Goodwins Theory
Narrative
Filming a music video with a narrative style is commonly used because its the best way to create a strong image for the artist. For example it allows the artist to use hyper realism to its full extent because there could actually be a meaning or story behind it in the music video.
It is often used by major labels because it creates a better image for the artist also know as a star image.
In this music video the narrative and story behind it is that they both thought that they had been talking to the same girl, but in the end of the video it turns out that they were actual twins.
The storyline keeps the viewer intrigued as they want to find out alongside the artist what has actually been going on. Even though the narrative doesn't directly appeal to one artist, they both have star image appealing to them and hyper reality as well. For example they were both showing off a lavish lifestyle making them seem quite powerful and making the viewer aspire to be like them even though they are in a bad situation.
Performance
Performance music videos are mainly used to show another side of the artist, it has less hyper reality because it shows what the artist would actually be like at one of there shows. It can also be used as a way to promote an artists shows if they actually show video footage of one of the shows amongst the video, which will show the atmosphere and make the audience want to attend aswell if they like what they see. This can also increase the sales of their merchandise at shows aswell meaning more income for the artist
These are also the most commonly found types of music videos.
This artist is an independant artist so hyper reality isn't pushed as much, he is using live performance aspects in this video to promote his shows as this is one of his main sources of income as people in modern day society rarely support buying music so it makes it even harder for an independent artist to actually make money of music sales.
Conceptual
These type of music videos are often very artistic and have a lot of different themes going on in them, some may have a deeper meaning behind them as well. They may also allow the viewer to come up with there own person interpretation for the video as well.
For example this music video is conceptual as there is no direct narrative or any performance aspects involved within it. The atmosphere and nature of this video leaves you to give the video your interpretation because of its artistry. These type of videos also tend to go viral because everyone is trying to work out their own meaning for and it is not usually what is seen in mainstream music videos.
Intertextuality
Intertextuality is where a music video references or uses the same ideas as a particular film, TV programme or other music videos etc. It is often used to pay homage to the particular thing they are referring to or used possibly because of their own personal experience and it may mean something to them.
For example this song and music video makes reference and pays homage to the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's, the title of the song is commonly used through out before the start of the choruses, the video doesn't directly relate to the original film but it uses some aspects for example him and his girlfriend eating breakfast, the girl could possibly represent Tiffany who is from the film.
